Behind the Design

Set in the snowbound expanse of Big White, this mountain home channels the timeless charm of Switzerland’s alpine villages, expressed through a bold, modern lens. The architecture draws heavily from chalet tradition with steeply pitched gabled roofs designed for heavy snowfall, exposed timber trusses that celebrate the structure’s craft, and a rich palette of stone and wood that anchor the home firmly in its winter landscape. Expansive panes of glass invite the crisp mountain light deep into the interior, framing sweeping views of the surrounding mountain peaks, while deep overhangs and layered beam work create dramatic shadow lines across the façade. Designed on a relatively narrow lot, the architecture was composed to maximize curb appeal, stretching the façade visually to appear as expansive as possible while discreetly concealing the attached garage within the overall form. The home’s materiality bridges past and present – locally sourced stone and warm timber echo the vernacular of the Swiss Alps, while sleek metal cladding and precision detailing introduce a contemporary edge. Elevated decks and sheltered terraces extend the living experience beyond the structure’s walls, ensuring a seamless connection to the outdoors in every season. Inside, the open volume beneath the soaring rooflines recalls the grand gathering halls of old-world lodges, reimagined here for modern mountain life. The result is an architectural composition that feels at both rooted in European alpine heritage and wholly attuned to the adventurous spirit and dramatic setting of Big White.
