Behind the Design

A balanced blend of rustic and refined, this design captures the spirit of the Rocky Mountain style with an evolved, modernized context. This tree engulfed retreat is designed to work within the natural typography of the lot, utilizing the existing contours of the landscape to provide depth and interest within the design footprint. Engaging the outdoors in a dramatic fashion, the expansive glazing provides a direct visual connection to the surrounding nature. Positioned on the lot in a unique angular way, each main room of the residence is opened to breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains in every direction. Rugged, yet sophisticated, the formwork is defined by a handsome exterior palette of natural stone, heavy stained timber beams and cleanly detailed batten siding. Steel elements incorporated into the exterior bring a modern focus to the design. The strong roofscape is inspired by the spectacular peaks of the Rocky Mountains, incorporating a moderate pitch, deep overhangs, and slopes in many differing configurations. A contemporary expression of a timeless design, this residence blends organically into its serene surroundings.
